Gold gained $4.30 to $556.50 in world trade on Monday before it fell off around $10 from its highs by the open of trade in New York Tuesday, but it then rallied to trade at over $560 at one point before it fell back off to close near its lows of the session with a loss of $3.50 from Friday’s close, but a loss of $7.80 on the day to fall from near-25 year highs set in world trade yesterday.

Silver gained $0.10 to $9.19 in world trade Monday before it fell off around $0.25 from its highs by the open of trade in New York Tuesday, but it then rallied to trade around $9.15 at one point before it fell back off to close near its lows of the session with a loss of $0.11 from Friday’s close, but a loss of $0.21 on the day to fall from 18 and ˝ year highs set in world trade yesterday.

The CRB Index gained 5.61 points to 342.45 to make a new 25 year high, platinum lost $7 to $1,034 to fall from 26 year highs, palladium lost $5 to $280, and copper held near all-time highs around $2.15.

Gold and silver equities started off slightly lower before climbing over 1% by late morning, but they then fell back off near unchanged to end the day slightly lower.  The XAU held unchanged at 9 and ˝ year highs while the HUI and GDM fell from all-time highs.

More Precious Metals Analysis:

“The gold market started out on a slightly firm note, but then fell back following an early rise in the Dollar. In fact, the gold market was mostly weak until after the London PM fix and then metals prices seemed to come alive in a buying wave, possibly because of tightening Capacity Utilization readings in the US. However, after another run to new highs the metals failed to hold the gains. We suspect that strength in the Dollar and news of profit taking in South African mining shares undermined sentiment in the market. At times the gold market suffers from too much bullish headline psychology and that is certainly prompting some longs to bank periodic profits.” - The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting

The U.S. dollar index gained overnight and then furthered its gains following this morning’s economic data that put some pressure on the fed to continue to raise interest rates.

Oil surged above $66 for the first time in 3 and ˝ months on fears over sanctions on Iran and the evacuation of employees in Nigeria that lead to supply fears.  Oil also gained on a report from the IEA that maintained demand forecasts for the U.S. and China after some speculated that they would cut demand forecasts.  Oil is now just $4.54 from its all-time high of $70.85 set on August 30th.

Treasuries found early losses on strong economic data, but they then rallied in late trade as “bond investors interpreted higher energy costs, at least for the moment, more as a tax on consumption than a driver of inflation.”

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on high oil prices and worries over earnings reports.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Intel, IBM, Google, Berkshire Hathaway and Business Wire, Dana Corp., Airbus and Boeing, Continental Airlines, Boston Scientific and Guidant, Forest Labs, Wells Fargo, and U.S. Bancorp.

Freeport-McMoRan net profit surprises - "Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., which warned in November that fourth-quarter production at its vast Indonesian mine was lower than planned, surprised Wall Street on Tuesday by reporting net profit doubled. "This reflects our extraordinary performance in December, when we were able to make up the deficits and meet targets," Chief Executive Officer Richard Adkerson told Wall Street analysts on a conference call. "We were able to get access to higher grade ores," he said of the Grasberg mine in Papua, where full production had been hobbled for some time after a landslide in late 2003 killed eight workers." Aurizon Provides Update on Canada's Next Gold Mine - "Aurizon acquired the Casa Berardi Project with the objective of advancing the Project to commercial production, in as short a period as possible, while at the same time reducing the pre-production capital costs and lowering the technical and financial risk of the Project. As a result of this approach, commercial production at Casa Berardi is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of this year. Based on a gold price of US$400 per ounce, a U.S. dollar exchange rate of 1.25, gold reserves of 1,247,000 ounces, and a recovery rate of 91%, the start up plan anticipates that the Project will produce an average of 175,000 ounces of gold per annum at an estimated total cash cost of US$219 per ounce, for an internal rate of return of 23%."
