Gold traded slightly lower in Asia and found minor gains in London and morning New York trade before it surged higher into the close and ended near its highs of the session with nice gains to come within just $3.90 of its 25 year closing high of $572.20 set on February 2nd. Silver also traded slightly lower in Asia and found minor gains in London, but it then gained about 15 cents in morning New York trade before it exploded above $10 in afternoon trade and ended near its highs with a gain of 4.21% to make a new 22 year closing high.
Euro gold neared €475, platinum gained $4 to $1,045, palladium gained $1 to $295, and copper climbed near $2.30.
Gold and silver equities spent the morning near unchanged but rose over 3% in afternoon trade and ended near their highs of the session.
Oil gained on supply fears due to geopolitical tensions and also on signs of rising demand. Natural gas stocks fell 171 billion cubic feet which was a bit larger than most expected.
The U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell markedly as the European Central Bank raised its key interest rate to 2.5% and signaled further hikes in the future. The euro rose to 4 week highs and the yield on the 10-year rose to near 4 month highs.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on mostly disappointing retail sales reports from various retailers. Higher interest rates and higher oil also influenced investors to sell.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Google, Northwest, Wal-Mart, Costco, Adidas, Del Monte, and Tenet.
More Commentary:
“A new high for the move rekindles speculative interest in the gold market and with the Dollar falling sharply during the session we can understand gold coming back into vogue. However, it also seems like the silver market continues to lead the complex up but the market might have forged part of the gains off some wild stories about the world supply of silver not being enough to meet future demand. In the end a nice tight correlation in all the metals suggests that the funds and physical buyers are back in the saddle.” - The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting
THE LOONIE WATCHER’S COMMENTARY FOR MARCH 02, 2006
The market close on MARCH 02, 2006, showed that the market conditions influencing the Loonie and the $USD have changed drastically since our last commentary (Feb 28, 2006)
THE LOONIE
Today’s closing price proved the Loonie has resumed it’s main trend, and the traders feel safe on the long side of the Loonie.
The Commercials agreed with the traders, and decided to stop their selling at the recent highs.
The Loonie will continue strong for the near term, with no serious (trend threatening) reactions occurring until there is a is a challenge from the $USD.
THE $USD
Smart money cashed out of their longs by today (March 02, 2006), and got back into the Loonie.
The locals hit the short side of $USD, and found a vacuum.
When no commercial buying surfaced going into the close of today, the traders joined the party.
The $USD finished with a close breaking the recent rally, leaving the longs in an untenable position. Time is now against the longs.
The $USD has had it’s momentum broken, and it should see its recent lows tested by the technical traders. Too early for shorting, but it’s time to exit for the bulls.
The subscribers to THE LOONIE WATCH (copyright 2006) have already received the necessary instructions to capitalize on the new information!
SUMMARY
The resumption of buying in the Crude Oil market has pushed the $USD into weakness, and boosted the Loonie into safe buying territory. The US stock market is just marking time (trading range) as the return of higher energy prices impacts the economy.
The Loonie is now a happy camper, with all systems reading go.
The $USD has moved out of its last trading range by heading lower, and the $USD bulls will probably be severely tested soon.
