Gold traded between $620 and $625 in Asia and jumped up to trade between $625 and $630 in London before it jumped up near $635 in morning New York trade, but it then fell back off below $630 ahead of a slight rally into the close that brought it back above $630 to get with in $1.60 of its 25 year closing high set last Wednesday.  Silver gained about 20 cents in Asia, added another 40 cents in London, and added still more in New York to end near its highs with a gain of more than 6%.

Euro gold rose back above €505, platinum gained $16 to $1,126 to new 26 year highs, palladium gained $9 to $363, and copper exploded 22 cents higher to new all-time highs at about $3.22.

Gold and silver equities jumped about 2% higher at the open but soon fell off to near unchanged before they rebounded slightly and carried minor gains into the close.

More Precious Metals Analysis:

From today’s Midas report by Bill Murphy of LemetropoleCafe.com:

“Gold rose $15 in the early going, with the key physical market PM Fix (most all gold pricing deals for the day are made on the Fix), coming in at a 25-year high of $634.75. Soon after the Fix was over, The Gold Cartel went into action AGAIN, right on cue. The President was doing his thing on TV at the time. Gold was tagged for $8.

As the day wore on, gold came right back. However, each time it took out $632, The Gold Cartel forces were there to stop it cold. One has to wonder now what sort of derivatives problems are percolating in the gold world.”

From The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting:

“The gold market impressed many in the trade with early gains on Tuesday and managed the gains in the face of initial weakness in the Dollar. As the session progressed a number of outside markets like silver and copper managed such impressive gains that gold rose right back to the vicinity of the precious highest closing price. With Iran making some very incendiary comments regarding the transfer of nuclear technology to their neighbors we suspect that flight to quality buying was intermingled in with the investment buying in gold. While the gold market has typically seen a positive daily price correlation with the energy and equity markets, that correlation was temporarily vacated on Tuesday. The gold market could easily have been put off by a recurrent headline suggesting that China would soon become the world's largest gold producer but given the current hype surrounding the market, traders are capable of discounting developments that aren't expected to occur in the coming 2-3 years.

The silver market managed an impressive upward extension after showing some initially choppy action early in the session. Surprisingly the silver market wasn't undermined by a minimal rise in the Dollar and a sharp slide in energy prices. Even more impressive is that silver managed to fully discount a bearish private silver surplus forecast of 48.4 million ounces for 2006. However, it seems that the US economic report slate came in surprisingly stronger than expected and with an explosion in copper prices on Tuesday, it would seem that the investment outlook for silver and the metals in general is going to remain entrenched. Another report on Tuesday suggested that ownership of silver and silver related investments was expanding rapidly and that the buyers were not selling their holdings as many would expect in the face of rising prices.”

Oil started off higher on renewed geopolitical concerns over Iran, but it soon fell off as President Bush spoke and laid out a plan to lower energy prices.

The U.S. dollar index dropped in Europe on strong German Sentiment, but it then rebounded in U.S. trade on strong U.S. Consumer Sentiment and ended only slightly lower on the day.  The euro rose to new 7 month highs.

Treasuries fell as strong economic data pushed the yield on the 10-year back above 5% to its highest since May 2002.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on strong economic data that renewed interest rate worries.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Meredith, Occidental Petroleum, Lucent, JetBlue, Northrop Grumman, BP, PepsiAmericas, Whirlpool, Burlington Northern, Reynolds American and Conwood, Lockheed, DuPont, AT&T, and Southern.

“My Two Ounces”

Our own Peter Spina came up with a few of his own:

-         Goldman Sachs actually places an average gold price forecast above the current price

-         Gold Investing for Dummies is peddled on CNBC, at your local bookstore and reaches #1 sales rank on Amazon.com

-         Gold & Silver Stocks added to the DOW Average (in an attempt to keep it going higher)

-         Bre-X stock surges as its ore samples “salted” with gold dust becomes valuable

-         Your DOT com and real estate bubble head friends start telling YOU about gold and silver!!
