The Metals:
Gold dropped $4.20 to $916.95 by a little after 8AM EST, but it then rallied back higher for most of the rest of trade and ended near its high of $928.20 with a gain of 0.62%. Silver fell slightly in Asia and remained near unchanged in London before it rose throughout trade in New York and ended near its high of $18.127 with a gain of 1.63%.
Euro gold rose to over €589, platinum gained $19.50 to $1963.50, and copper gained over 4 cents to about $3.75.
Gold and silver equities rose over 3% in the first half hour of trade, but they then fell back off with the major indices for the rest of the day and ended slightly lower.
The Economy:
There were no major economic reports today, but mortgage applications were shown to rise 7.5% last week according to the MBA. Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Export and Import Prices for June, Initial Jobless Claims for 7/05 expected at 395,000, and the Trade Balance for May expected at -$62.2 billion. At 10AM is Michigan Sentiment for July expected at 55.5 and at 2PM is the Treasury Budget for June expected at $33.0 billion.
The Markets:
Charts Courtesy of http://finance.yahoo.com/
Oil rose after Iran test-fired nine missiles and crude inventories fell a much larger than expected 5.8 million barrels, but it fell back off to find only a penny gain by the close as traders concentrated on demand destruction and the build in gasoline and distillate inventories of 1.0 million barrels and 1.8 million barrels. Refinery Utilization was unchanged at 89.2%.
The U.S. dollar index fell and treasuries rose on worries over Iran and concerns over the health of the economy and the overall financial system that dragged the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P over 2% lower by the close.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Fannie Mae, Northwest Air, GM, Boeing, Alcoa, Progressive, and Raytheon.
The Commentary:
“August Gold finished up 5.3 at 928.6, 1.4 off the high and 8.6 up from the low.
September Silver closed up 0.22 at 18.175. This was 0.165 up from the low and 0.005 off the high.
The gold market initially waffled around both sides of unchanged but as it became apparent that the Dollar was set to favor the downside, gold prices seemed to firm slightly. However, the gold market was looking to the energy complex for direction Wednesday and for most of the session the energy complex wasn't exhibiting the kind of action that emboldened the bull camp. In the end, support off geopolitical anxiety in the Middle East wasn't a dominating role in the trade and that seemed to upgrade the importance of the Dollar.
The silver market clearly diverged with the gold market during the trade Wednesday. In fact, early on the silver market managed to climb above the prior session's highs and in turn seemed to establish a firmer correlation between silver, platinum and copper prices. In short, the silver market seemed to embrace support from the physical commodity market angle, while the gold market seemed to be trading off an isolated focus.”- The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting
