The Metals:
Gold rose to $784.60 in early Asian trade before it fell back to see just a $2.60 gain at $763.85 near the New York open, but it then rallied back higher into the close and ended back near its early high with a gain of 2.89%. Silver rose to $11.21 and fell to $10.38 before it also rallied back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 2.98%.
Euro gold rose to about €591, platinum lost $33 to $1171.50, and copper lost a few cents to about $3.18.
Gold and silver equities traded just slightly lower in morning action, but they then fell off further in afternoon trade along with the major indices and ended with over 4% losses.
The Economy:
Report | For | Reading | Expected | Previous |
NY Empire State Index | Sep | -7.4 | 1.4 | 2.8 |

“The Federal Reserve on Monday added the most money to the banking system since the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the wake of Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy, Merrill Lynch's demise and AIG's need for cash.
The New York Fed added $70 billion in overnight repurchase agreements, known as repos. The central bank does a repo operation on almost every business day, but offered an unusually high amount today in light of the demand for reserves from banks and primary dealers.”
Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings CPI for August expected at -0.1% and Core CPI expected at 0.2%. At 9AM is the Net Foreign Purchases report for July and at 2:15PM is the FOMC policy statement that now comes with a very real possibility of a cut in interest rates by at least 25 basis points in order to help combat the current financial crisis.
The Markets:
Charts Courtesy of http://finance.yahoo.com/
Oil fell on worries over slowing demand and on healthy supply operations as Hurricane Ike did not do much damage.
The U.S. dollar index fell and treasuries rose substantially as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell roughly 2% at the open and fell even further in afternoon trade on financial worries as Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection, AIG fell about 60% on troubles raising cash, and Bank of America announced an agreement to buy Merrill Lynch.
The Commentary:
“December Gold finished up 22.5 at 787, 0.5 off the high and 17.5 up from the low.
December Silver closed up 0.34 at 11.135. This was 0.545 up from the low and 0.025 off the high.
At times on Monday the gold market had managed to climb by as much as $50 an ounce above last week's late lows. Clearly the combination of a weaker Dollar and rapidly rising economic uncertainty provided the gold market with its lift. With the US equity market under significant duress and threatening to make fresh lows for the year, it was clear that the marketplace remains concerned about some sort of systematic failure. However, at times the gold market fell back and that seemed to take place in the wake of softer than expected US scheduled report data. In other words, the market is being supported by flight to quality but the back and forth action around the highs Monday might be suggesting that some gold bulls are still a bit skeptical.
The silver market at times Monday managed to reach as much as 94 cents above last week's late lows and that clearly highlights the view that silver is some form of flight to quality instrument. However, since December silver saw a significant slide ahead of the US market action it seems that weakness in equity market prices served to knock some of the wind out of the bull's sails. However, despite the weaker than expected US scheduled number flow, silver managed a rally of roughly 77 cents from the pre-opening low and that would seem to discount the markets physical commodity market standing.”- The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting

Sterling Mining Company Suspends Production at Sunshine Mine - "Since 2003 Sterling Mining staff and employees have dedicated themselves to rehabilitating and resuming production at the Sunshine Mine. Despite resuming production in late 2007 and the significant progress made in the first half of 2008, the operation has encountered a series of unforeseen and unavoidable delays. Production through the end of August totaled approximately 354,000 ounces of silver, which is substantially less than management's expectations and less than what is required for self-sustaining operations. This, combined with volatility as it relates to precious metals stocks, ultimately prevented the Company from obtaining the financing required to continue operations at the current level. The workforce will be immediately reduced by approximately 60%." More

Kirkland Lake Gold Reports Financial Results Fiscal Q1 2009 - "Gold production was 9,193 ounces in the quarter, a decrease of 35% compared to the previous quarter (Q4/08: 14,090) and a 30% decrease compared to Q1/08 (13,204 ounces). This was a consequence of lower than forecasted grades and tons being realized within the existing mine due to above normal seismic activity in one area of the mine necessitating a change to our planned production schedule. Scheduled work to electrical power lines supplying the Company property and unscheduled repairs to the hoist together with difficulties associated with pastefill also disrupted production during the quarter. Management are confident that shortfalls in production will be recouped during the balance of the year." More
