Both metals fell off over 1% further in after hours access trade but have since rebounded back near unchanged at the time of writing.
Euro gold rose roughly €4 to about €622 on substantial euro weakness, platinum lost $77.50 to $1004, and copper fell another few cents to about $2.89.
Gold and silver equities fell over 2% by midmorning before they rebounded midday and saw slight gains by early afternoon, but they then fell back off into the close and ended with about 2% losses.

Oil retraced almost half of yesterday’s over 10% losses despite a higher dollar as it choose to follow stocks higher on hopes that a bailout plan will pass and help underpin demand.
The U.S. dollar index rose markedly and treasuries fell as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P rose on optimism that a bailout plan will be agreed upon, announced soon, and actually work. All three indices gained back roughly half of the historic losses suffered yesterday.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Pfizer, Merck and ImClone, Citigroup, and Pepsi Bottling.
The Commentary:
“Dear CIGAs,
WAKE UP.
In this crisis $250 billion is chump change. As a matter of fact, $750 billion is chump change.
The "Madness of the Crowd" does not recognize that the Fed lent $1.25 trillion last week. These loans were not to strong, but ailing financial entities.
Surprise, surprise, the $1.25 trillion in one week is much larger than $250 or $750 billion.
Stay the course and ignore the shorts, or if u can't stand the heat in the gold kitchen as Harry Truman kind of said, then please leave immediately!”- Jim Sinclair, JSMineset.com
“December Gold closed down 13.6 at 880.8. This was 1.8 up from the low and 18.7 off the high.
December Silver finished down 0.75 at 12.275, 0.405 off the high and 0.025 up from the low.
The gold market showed some initial strength and managed the early strength in the face of overt weakness in the rest of the metals complex. In fact, for a time the gold market was higher despite a modestly higher US Dollar. However, as the session progresses the strength of the Dollar rally and the breadth of the US equity market rally extended and that seemed to turn up the pressure on the gold market. Certainly it was premature to assume that a bailout package would pass, but apparently the markets were able to "hope" for passage. In the end, a sharp run up in energy prices were not even able to alter the mostly bearish tone toward gold.
While silver was certainly dragged downward by gold, it should be noted that silver prices were weak early in the session despite the face that gold was higher. Some silver bulls have to be disappointed that the silver market didn't get the slightest glimmer of hope off the sharp recovery bounce in the equity market as that suggests the physical demand crowd is really pessimistic toward near term prospects. At least in the near term the silver market continues to act more like a flight to quality instrument than a physical or industrial commodity market.”- The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting
