Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver End Barely Lower While Miners Gain 3%

Gold traded mixed in Asia before it fell back off in London to as low as $984.60 by a little after 8AM EST, but it then rallied back higher for most of the rest of trade and ended with a loss of just 0.035%. Silver followed a similar pattern and dropped to as low as $15.97 a little after 8AM EST, but it then climbed back higher into the close and ended with a loss of just 0.45%.

Euro gold rose to about €681, platinum lost $8 to $1268, and copper remained at about $2.71.

Gold and silver equities steadily rose throughout trade and ended with about 3% gains.

Tomorrow at 8:15AM EST brings ADP Employment for September expected at -200,000. At 8:30 is second quarter GDP expected at -1.2%, and at 9:45 is Chicago PMI for September expected at 52.0.

Oil fell slightly on worries over future demand after Consumer Confidence came in less than expected.

The U.S. dollar index rose as the yen fell after the Japanese finance minister hinted at actions aimed at halting the recent rise in the currency.

Treasuries rose slightly as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P mostly fell on worries over weak Consumer Confidence.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Gannet, Walgreen, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Disney.

Gold Fields’ (GFI) annual report, Kinross Gold’s (KGC) output, Apollo’s (AGT) loan deferral, Kirkland’s (KGI.TO) drill results, Minefinders’ (MFN) closed bought deal, and Arian’s (AGQ.V) Tepal transaction were among the big stories in the gold and silver mining industry making headlines today.
