Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver Gain About 2% and 4%

Australia’s decision to raise its interest rate to 3.25% and rumors over a plan by Gulf states to stop using the dollar for oil trading sent gold to a new all time high of $1043.50 by late morning in New York before it fell back off a bit in the last couple of hours of trade, but it still ended with a gain of 2.05%. Silver also soared higher throughout most of world trade and ended near its session high of $17.39 with a gain of 3.98%, but it remains a few dollars short of its 28 year closing high of $20.64 set on March 5^th of 2008 and well below its all-time high of $50 set in January 1980.

Euro gold rose to about €705, platinum gained $27 to $1318.50, and copper gained nearly 6 cents to about $2.78.

Gold and silver equities rose over 7% in the first hour of trade before they fell back off a bit in early afternoon trade, but they still ended with over 6% gains. The XAU, HUI, and GDM remain about 15-18% below their all-time closing highs set on March 14^th of 2008.

The Demise of the Dollar: Arab States in Secret Moves with China, Russia and France to Drop US Dollar for Oil Trading - "New basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar."

More... The transitional currency in the move away from dollars, according to Chinese banking sources, may well be gold. The Independent

Tomorrow at 2PM EST brings Consumer Credit for August expected at -$9.5 billion and the Treasury Budget for September.

The U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell while the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P gained over 1% on global economic confidence after Australia raised its interest rate to 3.25% and signaled that it feels its economy is strong enough to handle higher interest rates.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Delta, AMR, Boeing, Emerson and Avocent, Goldman Sachs, Intel, St. Jude, Microsoft, and Condé Nast.

Almaden’s (AAU) updated resource estimate, Gammon’s (GRS) update on operations, Entree’s (EGI) and Ivanhoe’s (IVN) signed investment agreement with Rio Tinto (RTP) and the Mongolian government, Keegan’s (KGN) drill results, Yamana’s (AUY) operational update, Impact’s (IP.V) drill results, First Majestic’s (FR.TO) third quarter production results, and Great Panther’s (GPR.TO) increased production were among the big stories in the gold and silver mining industry making headlines today.
