Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver Fall Over 1% and 3%

Gold remained near unchanged in Asia and London before it rose to see a gain of $4.30 at as high as $1059.55 by a little after 10AM EST in New York, but it then fell back off for the rest of trade and ended near its low of $1040.20 with a loss of 1.26%. Silver followed a similar pattern and gained $0.08 to $17.76 before it also fell back off in the last few hours of trade and ended near its low of $17.00 with a loss of 3.34%.

Euro gold fell to about €701, platinum lost $24 to $1331, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.00.

Gold and silver equities rose over 1% at the open, but they then fell back off for most of the rest of the day and ended with about 4% losses.

There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Durable Goods Orders for September expected at 1.0%. Excluding transportation, orders are expected at 0.7%. At 9AM is Consumer Confidence for October expected at 53.5 and the CaseShiller Home Price Index for August expected at -11.9%.

Oil fell after the U.S. dollar index turned markedly higher and treasuries fell as interest rose on worries over the treasury’s ability to sell a huge amount of debt this week. News that ING needs to split itself and issue $11.3B of shares also reignited worries over a repeat of last year’s credit crisis.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P reversed early gains and turned noticeably lower in reaction to the rebounding dollar and rising interest rates.

Among the big names making news in the market today were ING, Merck, Verizon, Corning, Citigroup, and Nokia.

COMEX Gold Trust (IAU) Total Tonnes in Trust: 75.26 - No change from yesterday’s data.

Aurizon’s (AZK) drill results, Gold Reserve’s (GRZ) property status, Entree’s (EGI) mining licenses, IAMGOLD’s (IAG) production guidance, Fortuna’s (FVI.V) updated NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate, and Silver Standard’s (SSRI) drilling update were among the big stories in the gold and silver mining industry making headlines today.

Gold Reserve Reports on Status of Brisas Property - "Gold Reserve Inc. (NYSE-Amex:GRZ) (TSX:GRZ - News) reported today that stories in the press relating to the takeover by the Government of Venezuela of the Brisas Property in southeastern Venezuela are erroneous. Personnel, apparently from CVG-Minerven, visited the Brisas Camp on Thursday claiming that they were there to assume control of the Brisas Del Cuyuni Concession. The individuals who arrived at the camp did not appear to have any written authorization to conduct such action on behalf of the Government. Thus, their actions did not appear to be legally supported. In any event, any action to assume control of the property without recognizing the status of the underlying hard rock concession, which contains 97% of the economic value of the mineral deposit, would be inconsistent with Venezuelan law."
