Bernanke Seeks to Defuse Criticism Over AIG With Call for Audit  Bloomberg

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Initial Jobless Claims for 1/16 expected at 440,000 and at 10AM are Leading Economic Indicators for December expected at 0.7% and the Philadelphia Fed survey for January expected at 18.8.

The Markets:

Charts Courtesy of http://finance.yahoo.com/

Oil fell on worries over energy demand after China tightened up its credit practices.  “The China Banking Regulatory Commission has asked several commercial banks to stop issuing new loans for the rest of January, the state-run China Securities Journal reported, citing several sources.  China's top banking regulator, Liu Mingkang, denied the report. But he said Chinese banks were expected to issue few loans this year than last year. The report follows several tightening measures by the Chinese government earlier this month.”

The U.S. dollar index rose versus the euro after stronger than expected economic data in the US countered recently weaker economic reports in Europe.

Treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell over 1% on worries over the banks and tighter Chinese lending practices.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Wells Fargo, Lehman Brothers, AMR, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and State Street.

The Commentary:

Dear CIGAs,

Due to the Republican victory in Massachusetts yesterday, the general commentary on F-TV is that the USA looks really good. The MOPE on Greece is going wild.

The dollar is no safe haven and will not guarantee the maintenance of buying power.

The large purchases by non US entities of US Treasuries in the TIC report smells like Limburger cheese. The US dollar economic recovery is nothing more than pixie dust.

To sustain a US economic recovery, there first needs to be an economic recovery to sustain.

Unemployment now becomes an increasing concern for both parties.

The Fed is locked into QE and in all probability is supporting the US Treasury market via the Caymans and other countries internationally.

Buy the dollar and sell gold? You have to be kidding. That is the madness of the crowd and the actions of the Crimex in paper gold.”- Jim Sinclair, JSMineset.com

Dear Friends,

The Treasury International Capital Flows data covering November 2009 (remember it is about two months behind the current month) reveals a huge surge in capital flows predominantly as a result of a massive buying binge in US Treasuries. I keep data going back to 2005 and November’s Treasury buying was the largest for any month through this entire time frame. As a matter of fact, prior to November’s huge number, the previous high in Treasury purchases occurred during the month of June 2009 when $100 billion worth of them were purchased on net. November topped that by another $18 billion.

Strangely enough, when you look into the breakdown of the Treasury buying by country, we see a decrease in the biggest buyer of US Treasuries, namely China. They sold about $9 billion worth. Japan compensated for that by buying another $11.4 billion. The biggest increase however came out of Great Britain where some $47 billion were added. Keep in mind that London is often the primary conduit through which foreign entities affect purchases of US Treasuries for the purpose of secrecy as that information generally does not get revealed until the Treasury revises the TIC data in June of each year. Call me cynical but we really have no idea who actually bought all those Treasuries through London offices. In times past the revisions have seen many of those purchases being credited to China but that does not guarantee anything of the sort this time around, especially with China being a net seller this month. WE also have a decent sized increase in Treasury buying out of those Caribbean based banks.

Were it not for the binge in Treasury buying, the Agency, Corporate Debt and Equity categories would not have been sufficient to fund the negative balance of trade.

This of course will be spun as a vote of confidence for the US Dollar as the spinmeisters will step up and proclaim that the world still has a strong appetite for US debt. Personally I think the Fed is buying the Treasuries.

Look closely at the rate of change of buying chart and you will see the steep drop off in the RATE OF CHINESE TREASURY purchases.- Dan Norcini, More at JSMineset.com
