Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver End With Modest Gains

Gold saw decent gains in Asia before it fell back off in London and dropped to as low as $1150.75 by early afternoon in New York, but it then bounced back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 0.03%. Silver fell to as low as $18.21 by midmorning in New York before it also rallied back higher and ended with a gain of 0.88%.

Euro gold rose to a new all-time high above €865, platinum gained $6.50 to $1738, and copper rose slightly to about $3.52.

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended near unchanged.

There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 9AM EST brings the Case-Shiller 20-city Index for February expected at -0.1% and at 10AM is Consumer Confidence for April expected at 53.5.

Oil fell on renewed worries over Greece that sent the euro lower. The U.S. dollar index reversed early gains and ended slightly lower.

Treasuries ended unchanged as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P reversed early gains and ended mixed after a better than expected earnings report from Caterpillar was offset by concerns over Greece.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Hertz and Dollar thrifty, Citigroup, and Caterpillar.

COMEX Gold Trust (IAU) Total Tonnes in Trust: 78.31: +1.53 change from yesterday’s data.

Silver Trust (SLV) Total Tonnes in Trust: 8,912.94 - No change from yesterday’s data.

Tanzanian Royalty’s (TRE) comments on Tanzania’ passed proposed Mining Act 2010, Apollo’s (AGT) unwound currency hedges and paid down debt, Fronteer’s (FRG) acquisition of Nevada Eagle Resources LLC from Gryphon Gold Corp., US Gold’s (UXG) drill results, ITH’s (THM) assay results, Randgold’s (GOLD) mine development, Fortuna’s (FVI.V) results of a positive Pre-feasibility Study, ECU Silver’s (ECU.TO) new appointments, and Sabina’s (SBB.V) option to earn up to a 100% interest on the Cook Lake Volcanic Massive Sulphide ("VMS") properties were among the big stories in the gold and silver mining industry making headlines today.
