Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver End Mixed

Gold fell $7.35 to $1186.15 in Asia, but it then rallied back higher in London and New York and ended near its late morning high of $1200.13 with a gain of 0.29%. Silver fell to as low as $17.515 by about 10AM EST in New York before it rallied back higher into the close, but it still ended with a loss of 0.95%. Both metals have surged to new highs in after hours access trade at the time of writing.

Euro gold rose to about €975, platinum lost $42 to $1487, and copper fell over 10 cents to about $3.03.

Gold and silver equities opened up over 1% lower, but they quickly rebounded to about unchanged and then extended higher in afternoon trade to close out the day with about 3% gains.

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Durable Goods Orders for April expected at 1.5%. Excluding transportation, orders are expected at 0.7%. At 10AM is the New Home Sales report for April expected at 425,000.

Oil fell under $70 a barrel as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries rose on further worries about Europe that sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P over 2% lower at the open of trade, but all three indices rallied back higher in afternoon trade and the Dow and Nasdaq ended with only small losses while the S&P was able to end with a modest gain. Today’s $42 billion 2-year note auction drew a high yield 0.769% with a bid to cover of 2.93.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Pabst Blue Ribbon, Medtronic, Magna, and Microsoft.
