The Metals:
Gold rose in London to see an almost $20 gain at as high as $12.17.80 by about 9AM EST before it chopped its way back lower into the close, but it still ended with a gain of 1.26%. Silver climbed over 2% to as high as $18.325 by late morning in New York before it fell back off a bit in the last couple of hours of trade, but it still ended with a gain of 1.96%.
Euro gold rose to about €955, platinum gained $14.50 to $1520.50, and copper rose slightly to about $3.01.
Gold and silver equities saw over 2% gains at the open before they fell to trade only about 1% higher by midmorning and then rallied back near their opening highs midday, but they then fell back off in afternoon trade and ended with only slight gains.

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Import and Export Prices for June and Retail Sales for June expected at -0.2%. Excluding autos, sales are expected at 0.0%. At 10AM is the Business Inventories report for May expected at 0.2% and at 2PM is the release of FOMC minutes from the fed’s last meeting.

Oil climbed to over $77 a barrel as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell on better than expected earnings reports and forecasts that sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P over 1% higher. While it was a bit concerning that Portugal had its debt downgraded, the major stock indices and currency markets seemed to be soothed by news that Greece had a successful debt auction. Today’s $21 billion 10-year note auction in the US drew a yield of 3.119% with a bid to cover of 3.09.
Among the big names making news in the market today were GE, Apple, BlackRock, Pimco, BP, Alcoa, and Interactive Data.
