The Metals:
Gold and silver waffled near unchanged for most of trade in Asia and London, but they then fell off rather markedly throughout trade in New York and gold ended near its late session low of $1157.75 with a loss of 2.2% while silver ended near its late morning low of $17.569 with a loss of 3.19%.
Euro gold fell under €894, platinum lost $20.65 to $1526.85, and copper fell slightly to about $3.21.
Gold and silver equities fell roughly 4% by midday before they climbed back higher in late trade, but they still ended with over 3% losses.

Oil fell and the U.S. dollar index rose slightly on worries over the economy that encouraged market participants to raise cash.
Treasuries extended early losses after today’s $38 billion 2-year note auction drew a high yield of 0.665% with a bid to cover of 3.33.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P saw slight gains at the open on mostly stronger than expected earnings reports, but they then fell back to about unchanged after Consumer Confidence came in worse than expected and all three indices remained mixed for the rest of the day.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Tribune, Office Depot, U.S. Steel, Lockheed, Lexmark, FedEx, CIT, BP, DuPont, and Occidental.
