Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver End Mixed After Late Session Comeback

Gold fell $5.85 to $1220.25 in Asia and climbed back higher in London to see a 20 cent gain at $1226.30 at about 9AM EST before it dropped off rather markedly in the next hour of trade and fell to as low as $1217.50 by midmorning in New York, but it then exploded back higher in the last few hours of trade and ended near its early afternoon high of $1232.32 with a gain of 0.29%. Silver fell to as low as $18.15 before it also rallied back higher, but it still ended with a loss of 1.02%.

Euro gold rose to about €955, platinum lost $9.59 to $1529.50, and copper rose slightly to about $3.35.

Gold and silver equities opened up the day with over 1% losses, but they then rallied back higher midday and ended with almost 2% gains.

There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Initial Jobless Claims for 8/14 expected at 475,000 and at 10AM are Leading Economic Indicators for July expected at 0.2% and the Philadelphia fed survey for August expected at 7.5.

Oil fell after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell a smaller than expected 800,000 barrels. Gasoline inventories were unchanged and distillates rose 1.1 million barrels.

The U.S. dollar index ended slightly higher while the pound rose on minutes from the Bank of England’s last meeting. The euro was mixed after a German bond auction drew strong demand.

Treasuries rose on “speculation the weakening economic recovery may prompt the Federal Reserve to boost debt purchases.”

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P eventually rose slightly on a modestly encouraging retail sales report from Target.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Target, GM, Deere, and BHP Billiton and Potash.

Note: Change in Total Tonnes from yesterday’s data: SPDR added 6.689 tonnes , the LSE added 1.08 tonnes, and the JSE added 0.24 tonnes.

COMEX Gold Trust (IAU) Total Tonnes in Trust: 92.38 - No change from yesterday’s data.

Silver Trust (SLV) Total Tonnes in Trust: 9151.03 - No change from yesterday’s data.
