The Metals:
Gold saw slight gains in Asia and London before it fell back off in early New York trade to $1253.55 and then jumped up to a new session high of $1262.25 by about 9:40AM EST, but it then chopped its way back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 0.12%. Silver climbed to as high as $20.138 by about 8:30AM EST before it also fell back off, but it still ended with a gain of 0.71% and closed at a new 30 month high.
Euro gold fell to about €985, platinum gained $5.45 to $1556.20, and copper rose a few cents to about $3.49.
Gold and silver equities jumped over 1% higher at the open, but they then fell back off for most of the rest of trade and ended with slight losses.

The fed’s Beige Book noted “widespread signs of a deceleration” in the economy.

Oil rose as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell on easing debt worries in Europe after the Portuguese government successfully sold $839 million in bonds.
The US treasury sold $21 billion in 10-year notes at a high yield of 2.67% with a strong bid to cover of 3.21.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly higher on encouraging signs from Europe.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Foster’s, HSBC, BP, Talbots, and Coca-Cola.
