The Metals:
Gold saw a modest gain at as high as $1248.00 in Asia before it fell back off in London to as low as $1240.92 by about 8:30AM EST and then rose to a new session high of $1248.88 in midmorning New York trade, but it then chopped back lower into the close and ended with a gain of just 0.06%. Silver soared to as high as $20.21 by about 10:30AM EST before it also fell back off a bit in the last few hours of trade, but it still ended at a new 30-month high with a gain of 1.51%.
Euro gold fell to about €967, platinum gained $6 to $1543, and copper rose over 7 cents to about $3.47.
Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended mixed.

Bank Stocks Climb as Basel Gives Firms Eight Years to Comply Bloomberg
Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Retail Sales for August expected at 0.3%. Excluding autos, sales are still expected at 0.3%. At 10AM is the Business Inventories report for July expected at 0.7%.

Oil rose on continued supply problems and raised demand expectations after signs of good growth in China.
The U.S. dollar index fell after today’s lax bank reform changes out of Basel encouraged market participants to put cash to work.
Treasuries rose after the fed “bought $3.4 billion of Treasuries as part of a program to reinvest principal payments on its mortgage holdings to prevent money from being drained out of the financial system.”
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P rose on the tame banking reform rules out of Basel and indications of good economic growth from China.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Genzyme, BP, HP, Walt Disney, Microsoft, and Hertz and Dollar Thrifty.
