The Metals:
Gold rose to a new all-time high of $1299.93 in Asia before it fell to as low as $1294.50 by about 10:30AM EST, but it then bounced back higher in the last few hours of trade and ended with a gain of 0.05% at a new all-time closing high. Silver climbed to a new 30-year high of $21.615 in Asia before it fell to as low as $21.31 by about 10:30AM EST, but it then bounced back higher in the last few hours of trade and ended with a gain of 0.28%.
Euro gold remained at about €962, platinum lost $9.25 to $1627, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $3.59.
Gold and silver equities saw slight gains at the open, but they then fell back off slightly in midmorning trade and ended with modest losses.
European Central Banks Halt Gold Sales CNBC
The Economy:
There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 9AM EST brings the Case-Shiller 20-city Index for July expected at 3.3% and at 10AM is Consumer Confidence for September expected at 53.0.

Oil ended near unchanged while the U.S. dollar index found slight gains after the euro dropped on debt worries in Europe that stemmed from a downgrade in Ireland.
Treasuries added to early gains after today’s $36 billion 2-year note auction drew a high yield of 0.441% with a very strong bid to cover of 3.78.
The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly lower on debt concerns.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Vivendi, Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines and AirTran, AIG, Unilever, and Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.
