The Metals:
Gold waffled near unchanged in Asia and saw about a $10 gain in London before it extended even higher in late morning New York trade and ended near its late session high of $1341.10 with a gain of 1.75% at a new record high. Silver climbed to a new 30-year high of $22.74 and ended with a gain of 3.09%.
Euro gold rose to about €968, platinum gained $29.50 to $1693.25, and copper climbed 6 cents to about $3.72.
Gold and silver equities rose over 3.5% by midmorning and remained near their highs into the close.

Oil rose as the U.S. dollar index and treasuries fell on more quantitative easing talks that sent the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P markedly higher. Today’s impetus came from the Bank of Japan who “pledged to pump more funds into the struggling economy and keep rates virtually at zero, surprising markets and stealing a march on the Federal Reserve in providing a fresh dose of economic stimulus.”
Among the big names making news in the market today were Walgreen, Goldman Sachs, and Ford.
