Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold Ends Near Unchanged While Silver Jumps Over 1% Higher

Gold remained near unchanged in Asia before it fell back off in London and saw a $10.65 loss at as low as $1328.05 by about 10AM EST, but it then rallied back higher for most of the rest of trade in New York and ended near its early afternoon high of $1342.05 with a loss of just 0.02%. Silver fell to as low as $23.159 before it also climbed back higher in the last few hours of trade and ended near its early afternoon high of $23.924 with a gain of 1.19%.

Euro gold rose to about €966, platinum gained $3.25 to $1694.75, and copper remained at about $3.86.

Gold and silver equities fell about 2% at the open, but they soon rebounded to find modest gains by midmorning and remained near that level for most of the rest of trade.

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings Durable Goods Orders for September expected at 1.8%. Excluding transportation, orders are expected at 0.2%. At 10AM is the New Home Sales report for September expected at 299,000.

Oil erased overnight losses and ended modestly higher on decent economic data.

Treasuries “remained lower after the government’s auction of $35 billion in two-year debt, the second of four note sales this week totaling $109 billion, drew higher- than-average demand.

The securities yielded a record-low 0.40 percent, versus the average forecast of 0.409 percent in a Bloomberg News survey of 8 of the Federal Reserve’s 18 primary dealers. The bid-to- cover ratio, which gauges demand by comparing total bids with the amount of securities offered, was 3.43. The average at the past 10 auctions was 3.2.”

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P reversed early losses and ended slightly higher on mixed earnings reports.

Among the big names making news in the market today were IBM, DuPont, Regions Financial, Puma, Coach, and Ford.
