The Metals:
Gold rose $9.40 to as high as $1430.40 at around 10AM EST before it fell back to almost unchanged in the next hour of trade, but it then bounced back higher in the last couple of hours of trade and ended with a gain of 0.27%. Silver jumped up to as high as $36.245 in midmorning New York trade, but it then chopped back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 0.28%.
Euro gold fell to about €1018, platinum lost $32.25 to $1745.50, and copper fell to about $4.17.
Gold and silver equities fell over 1% by midmorning before they rebounded in afternoon trade, but they still ended with slight losses.
The Economy:
There were no major economic reports today. Tomorrow brings Empire Manufacturing, Export and Import Prices, Net Long Term TIC Flows, and a FOMC Rate Decision.

Oil fell in early trade on concerns over slowing economic growth, but geopolitical worries in Libya and Bahrain rallied prices in late trade and oil ended with a small gain.
The U.S. dollar index fell as the euro rose “after European Union leaders agreed on a retooled bailout plan for the region’s most indebted nations.” “The Japanese yen retreated versus the U.S. dollar and euro Monday, as the Bank of Japan provided a massive dose of liquidity and further loosened its monetary policy in the wake of last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.”
Treasuries rose as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P fell on worries over the Japanese economy, but early session losses were largely pared by the close.
Among the big names making news in the market today were Apple, GE, BofA, IBM, and Berkshire Hathaway.
