Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver Rise Almost 1%

Gold climbed to as high as $1439.33 by midmorning in New York and closed just 40 cents away from a new all-time closing high with a gain of 0.93%. Silver climbed to as high as $37.938 and closed with a gain of 0.88% at a new 31-year closing high.

Euro gold rose to over €1012, platinum lost $2 to $1769.50, and copper climbed 3 cents to about $4.30.

Gold and silver equities rose over 1% at the open and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Tomorrow at 8:30AM EST brings March’s jobs data. Nonfarm Payrolls are expected at 185,000, the Unemployment Rate is expected at 8.9%, Hourly Earnings are expected at 0.2%, and the Average Workweek is expected at 34.3. At 10AM is Construction Spending for February expected at -0.7% and the ISM Index for March expected at 61.4.

The U.S. dollar index fell as the euro rose on higher than expected inflation data in Europe.

Treasuries waffled near unchanged as the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P struggled to find gains on worries over higher oil prices.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Honda, Mazda, RIM, JPMorgan, and David Sokol.

“I am posting this chart up to try to get a better read on the volume being done in the gold pit. There is a defect in the software that I am using which makes it a bit tough during the transition between contracts from active or front month to the next most active which then becomes integrated into the continuous contract price and volume.

As volume drops off in the April contract it shows up on the continuous contract but that same volume is increasing in the June as it gets ready to become the active month for charting purposes. June will shortly be the contract employed when we do volume analysis on the continuous contract but for the immediate time I am having to use a separate chart for the June to catch its volume readings.

Note that the last few bars are showing the transition to it as the most active contract. I apologize for neglecting to catch that my comments on the recent gold chart were the same as yesterday when it comes to the volume. There was a drop off in volume as traders were winding down positions related to the end of the month/quarter but volume picked up to more normal levels yesterday in the June.

Note that strong volume is anything over 75,000 contracts on one of these bars. Decent volume is anything above 62,000 or so. These are 8 hour bar readings and not the total for the day so keep that in the back of your mind as you review this.

As you can see, there was decent volume driving the move towards resistance but once it got there bulls lost interest in pressing it through that level and volume has now subsided. I want to see what kind of readings we get in the June tomorrow as the new month begins as well as next Monday when we get the advent of a new week to see whether hedge funds are going to come back in and recommit fresh money to the metals.”- Dan Norcini, More at http://www.traderdannorcini.blogspot.com/
