The Metals: Gold waffled on either side of unchanged in Asia and London, but it then moved steadily higher in the last few hours of trade in New York and ended with a gain of 0.27% at a new record closing high. Silver briefly dipped back under $40 in New York before it also rallied back higher in late trade and ended with a gain of 1.14%. Euro gold fell to about €1115, platinum gained $16.75 to $1804, and copper gained over 7 cents to about $4.47. Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended mixed. Treasuries remained higher after today’s $35 billion 2-year note auction sold at a high yield of 0.417% with a bid to cover of 3.14. The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly lower on worries over debt. Among the big names making news in the market today were American Apparel, UPS, Chrysler, 3M, Ford, and Books-A-Million and Borders. The Commentary:  “Dear Extended Family,
There is no functional hedge against the downgrade of US Treasuries that is sure to come with or without a default except gold. The cat is out of the bag. The political opposition can back the present administration into a corner on the most important issue, debt. If that is the case with debt, then what else could they do it with? To assume there will be a default is extreme, however within a week we will know. There are those in the political opposition that might go to any length to cripple the present administration. The only conclusion that I can come to is that you should NOT take your gold hedges off. At $1764 a runaway gold bull market becomes an exponential run away gold bull market.
