Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold and Silver Fall Slightly While Stocks Gain

Gold climbed $17.30 to $1844.70 in early Asian trade before it fell to see a $15.12 loss at as low as $1812.28 by early afternoon in New York, but it then bounced back higher in the last hour of trade and ended with a loss of just 0.22%. Silver rose to as high as $41.32 by about 7AM EST before it fell back to as low as $40.315 and ended with a loss of 1.63%.

Euro gold fell to about €1328, platinum gained $11.75 to $1817, and copper fell 7 cents to about $3.89.

Gold and silver equities fell nearly 2% by late morning and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

Tomorrow brings Initial Jobless Claims, CPI, Empire Manufacturing, the Current Account Balance, Industrial Production, Capacity Utilization, and the Philadelphia Fed.

Oil pared some losses after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 6.7 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 2.0 million barrels, and distillates rose 1.7 million barrels, but it still fell over 1% on the day.

The U.S. dollar index fell as the euro rose on “comments from the European Commission about the possibility of joint euro area bonds that could help ease the region's debt crisis.”

Treasuries turned slightly higher after today’s $14 billion 30-year note auction sold at a high yield of 3.31% with a bid to cover of 2.85.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P reversed early losses and ended decently higher on easing worries about Europe’s debt problems.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Credit Agricole, SocGen, CIT, GE, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Boston Scientific, BofA, and Oaktree.

“U.S. Stock Market- The fact that the Fed expanded its meeting from one-day to two next week and that there’s been recent dissension in votes, I suspect Bernanke is going to try to get approval for some sort of QE 3. Meanwhile, the U.S. stock market is groping for a bottom and Europe is oversold.

U.S. Bonds- If we do get some sort of more funny money from the Fed next week and rates drop sharply off of that and continuing weak economic numbers, yours truly is all but certain to finally go short. The fact that Pimco’s Gross is long again could be an emotional signal not seen in years. Stay tuned.
